Investigation Summary

On July 31, 2000, Employee #1, of Biological Sciences Curriculum Studies, was beginning to descend a flight of stairs with her hands full of papers and other items. She missed the first step and, unable to catch herself, tumbled down the entire 11-step flight to the landing 13 ft below. Employee #1 was unconscious but breathing, and was transported to a local hospital. However, she never regained consciousness and was taken off life support on August 8, 2000, killed by the fall. The stairs and the landing were constructed of a concrete aggregate. Investigation of the accident revealed that the stairs were in compliance with OSHA regulations and no citations were issued.
