Employee Is Injured by Metal Chip

At approximately 9:50 a.m. on August 3, 2006, Employee #1 was a member of a track repair crew that was working on the railroad running from the CEMEX Victorville Plant to the Black Mountain Quarry. Employee #1 was spiking rail, when a swing of the spike maul went wide and glanced off of a fish plate. A piece of metal chipped off the maul head and struck him in the neck. It penetrated his skin and lodged under the top of his sternum. He was hospitalized at St. Mary's Medical Center, in Apple Valley, for surgical removal of the metal chip.
