Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 171110232
Event: 06/20/2001
Employee burned when sprayed by sulfuric acid

At 10:45 a.m. on June 20, 2001, Employee #1 was unloading a bulk tank truck containing 98-percent sulfuric acid to the company acid holding tank. After hooking up the hoses, Employee #1 walked around to the far side of the tank truck to talk with the driver. Since it was a very warm day, Employee #1 removed his acid suit jacket. The hose that connected the truck to the tank split and began to spray acid into the air. The truck driver went to the front of the truck to shut off activity and Employee #1 ran to the rear of the truck without putting on the acid suit jacket. Employee #1 ran through the acid spray to access another shut-off valve and received chemical burns to his face and shoulder. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
