Investigation Summary
At approximately 3:00 p.m. on September 25, 2000, Employee #1, a saw hand with approximately 35 years of tree felling experience, was logging an approximately 600 acre site near Erwinville, LA. Apparently, Employee #1 used a 12 in. high cur to fell a 100 ft tall, 18 in. diameter sweet gum tree; as it dropped, he moved west of the stump. The tree fell to the east and struck another gum tree 8 ft away. This caused the felled tree to alter its line of travel and kick back, striking Employee #1. He was found on the ground by the skidder operator; he said he could not feel his legs and kept asking the skidder operator to get something off his abdomen, even though nothing was there. The coworker dragged Employee #1 over 100 ft to the truck and called 911 for assistance. He tried to administer CPR with assistance from emergency personnel over the phone, but without success. Paramedics were also unable to revive him, and Employee #1 was declared dead at the scene.
