Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202289450
Event: 10/10/1999
Employee #1 through #3 hit by drunk driver, one fatality

On October 10, 1999, three road construction workers, employees for Stripe-A-Lot Company, were putting a road marking on the inside left turn lane of US Highway 441 in Apopka, FL. A private citizen who was suspected drunk driving, drove through the barricades and hit all three co-workers, killing one worker and critically injuring the other two workers. Although the driver was under the influence, it was found that the barricades or "maintenance of traffic" was not set-up appropriately for the work situation. It was found that the advance warning device (illuminated arrow board) was too close to the work area and should have been put further down the road prior to a road tapering and lane closure.
