Event: 05/14/1999
Two employees injured when trench wall collapses

On May 14, 1999, Employees #1 and #2 were working in an approximately 4 ft wide by 69 ft long by 7 ft deep trench when a side wall collapsed and buried them. Coworkers pulled one employee from the trench relatively quickly, but it took emergency personnel four hours to rescue the other employee. Both sustained injuries that required hospitalization. The wall that collapsed was unprotected. A trench box had been installed, but the employees were not in the protected area at the time of the accident.
