Investigation Summary
Employee #1, age 19, had just uncoupled three rail cars and had the locomotive and one car pull forward past the spur switchover point. He pulled the switch and mounted the back of the car still hooked to the engine. He then told the operator to reverse back to the spur. At the same time, the three cars that he had uncoupled on the main line started moving downgrade to where he was riding. The car he was on had just started to move onto the spur when it collided with the other cars coming at him. Employee #1 was struck and killed instantly. The car he was on then derailed.
