Event: 07/29/1998
Employee dies of heat-related heart attack

On July 29, 1998, Employee #1 was grinding and sanding the tracks for sliding doors on decks D and E on a ship named The Fisher. At approximately 2:30 p.m., he clocked out and went to the bike area on the wet dock. He saw his supervisor there and rode on a motor bike with him to the supervisor's office to get information on the lottery picks. He was driven back to the wet dock and was walking to his bike when became dizzy and fell to his knees. He was picked up by his supervisor, who gave him a cold compress and water. An ambulance was called and arrived at about 2:50 p.m. Employee #1 was coherent and thanked people at the wet dock for helping him. He was transported to the first aid station, where his vital signs were normal. First Aid gave him oxygen and placed ice packs on his head and under his arms. Employee #1 told them he felt better and he was allowed to sit up. At approximately 3:20 p.m., the oxygen was discontinued. Employee #1 was joking and talking, and at 3:30 p.m. was given permission to call his daughter. At 4:10 p.m., he was asked for a urine sample. He was giving the container to the EMTs when he collapsed. Employee #1 was ventilated and defibrillated, and the West Jefferson ambulance was called. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:08 p.m.
