Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202288148
Event: 04/18/1998
EMPLOYEE RAN OVER BY TRUCK AND KILLED

On April 18, 1998, Employee #1 was in an orange grove picking oranges. He had set up a ladder and a fruit tub on the East side of a row of orange trees. Another employee, a truck driver, was driving a grove goat (narrow truck) between the rows of orange trees, heading North, on the West side of the orange trees. The truck driver was dropping off empty fruit tubs for the employees. The truck driver had dropped off fruit tubs for several employees, including Employee #1, when he realized there would not be enough fruit tubs for the last employee in the row. The truck driver then put the truck in reverse and backed up to the beginning of the row where he remembered leaving an extra fruit tub. After the truck driver picked up the extra fruit tub and started to drive forward, he saw Employee #1 on the ground in front of the truck and realized that he had backed over Employee #1. Employee #1 suffered severe injuries to his head and neck and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
