Investigation Summary

On October 10, 1997, Employee #1, an operator of a roadside assistance vehicle, was changing a flat tire on a disabled vehicle. While in the process of changing a flat tire on a disabled vehicle, a third vehicle struck the rear of the disabled vehicle which then struck and killed Employee #1. The employee's service truck and the disabled vehicle were both located out of the roadway in the area between the interstate highway's slow lane and the entrance ramp to the interstate. In attempting to merge onto the interstate, the third vehicle left the roadway entering the berm or safety zone between the roadways, striking the disabled vehicle. Charges were filed against the operator of the third vehicle.
