Employee Drowns While Whitewater Rafting

Employee #1, the lead guide for a whitewater rafting company, was part of a crew that launched 13 rafts down the Ocoee River. The rafts traveled to Alien Ledge where one of the rafts became lodged. Employee #1, who was in front of the lodged raft, stopped and walked up the bank to a spot up river from the lodged raft. He entered the water at an angle to the lodged raft and used the swift flowing current to assist him in swimming to the ledge where the raft was lodged. As he approached the raft, he reached out to the raft. At this time, his legs made a downward motion and he disappeared in the water and drowned. He was wearing a type III Personal Flotation Device and a helmet at the time of the accident.
