Investigation Summary

On September 2, 1997, Employees #1 and #2, both state troopers, were responding to an officer in need of assistance. They were headed west on the Crescent Lake cut-off road, approximately 12 miles east of Crescent. The call had come from a trooper who was tending to a single car accident involving a drunk subject who had run off the road into the brush on the south side of the road. When Employee #1 passed the accident, which was on his left, he pulled onto the hard shoulder to prepare to make a U-turn. As he made his U-turn, the car was broadsided by a chip truck that was also traveling west. The troopers' jeep made three revolutions and Employee #2, who had removed his seat belt, was ejected. Employees #1 and #2 were killed instantly.
