Event: 11/15/1999

Employee injured when buried in trench cave-in

Employee #1 was working in a 30 ft long by 6 ft wide by 10 ft deep trench. He was going up a ladder along the east wall when a section of the west wall directly opposite him collapsed, burying Employee #1 between 1 and 2 ft over his head. A coworker used a backhoe and then a hand shovel to remove the soil from around the Employee #1's head and shoulders and provide breathing space. Emergency crews arrived and rescued Employee #1 from the trench within 45 to 60 minutes. He sustained major injuries to his upper torso and head, for which he was hospitalized. The coworker estimated that Employee #1's head was buried between 30 and 60 seconds. The trench was not protected in any manner.
