Employee Dies after Fall from Extension Ladder

On August 1, 2002, Employee #1, a retired gas line technician who supplemented his income by doing handyman-type residential electrical work, was in the attic of a structure. He was using an extension ladder when the ladder apparently slipped and he fell 10 feet onto a concrete floor. Employee #1 sustained severe head injuries and was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, CA. He was diagnosed with extensive bilateral subarachnoid hemorrhages, bitemporal brain contusions, and a left basilar skull fracture. Employee #1 died at 1:30 p.m. on the following day. The extension ladder was not blocked or tied-off.
