Investigation Summary
On April 19, 2005, Employee #1 of Cal North Cabinets, Inc., was using a table saw to cut wood scribe along its length. He had removed the guard on the saw, as instructed, because the saw was not designed to work when the fence was set at 0.31 in., as it was at the time of the accident. He was using a push stick to move the material through the blade, when the wood scribe bound up and kicked back toward him. Because Employee #1 was pushing the scribe toward the blade, his momentum carried his right hand into the unguarded table saw blade. He sustained a laceration of the middle finger on his right (dominant) hand and lesser injuries to his right thumb. A coworker standing next to Employee #1 heard a binding noise, saw the scribe kick back, and witnessed Employee #1 being injured in a "split second." This coworker confirmed that the saw guard cannot be used when wood scribe is being cut, because neither the scribe nor the push stick can be passed over the blade with the saw guard in place. The coworker took Employee #1 for medical treatment at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, where Employee #1 was hospitalized for several days.
