Employee Amputates Finger While Cutting Rose Stems

At approximately 8:40 a.m. on December 20, 2003, an employee was employed by Dole Fresh Flowers as a flower cutter for two months. She was cutting the stem ends of the roses and she cut her finger at the same time with one stroke. The stem cutter was not guarded at the point of operation. She had no previous experience in using the stem cutter. As a result of the incident, she sustained right ring finger amputation to first knuckle. Causal factor is the stem chopper was not guarded at the point of operation to protect employee's hands from advertently entering the point of operation. The employee was not hospitalized.
