Employee injured while inspecting repair of press valve

At approximately 12:00 p.m. on June 9, 2003, Employee #1, working at a facility that repaired and replaced vehicle tires, was inspecting the replacement of a press valve on the tire press. After the press valve was successfully replaced, the tire press was operated to ensure that the work was correctly completed. During the compression of the hub ends into the solid rubber tire, one of the vertical pieces associated with the press cage broke free, flew outward, and struck the employee in the abdomen and caused blunt force trauma to his abdominal cavity. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was hospitalized for treatment.
