Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 300860871
Event: 12/08/2002
Employee injured in fall from a stack of hay

At 7:37 a.m. on December 8, 2002, Employee #1, a farm laborer, sustained a dislocated shoulder, five cracked ribs and head trauma after falling approximately 9-feet from a stack of baled hay. Employee #1 had volunteered to feed the owner's horses early in the day and had proceeded to the enclosed barn to get two bales of hay. He had climbed up by an appropriate extension ladder approximately 9-feet to the top of the hay stack to toss the two bales of hay to ground level when the baling twine of one of the bales broke. This resulted in Employee #1 falling approximately 9-feet to the enclosure floor. Employee #1, the lone employee of this employer, was working alone. There were no witnesses. Employee #1 was transported by paramedics to the Riverside County Medical Center in Moreno Valley where he was treated and hospitalized for 7 days.
