Employee amputates finger in miter saw

At approximately 8:50 a.m. on February 19, 2002, Employee #1 was operating a miter saw (12 in., Model F, Serial Number 01238120A) to cut a panel (redwood, 70 in. by 2.5 in. by 0.5 in.) for the frame of a spa. While cutting the material, the guard on the miter saw broke. The left hand of Employee #1 struck the rotating blade, amputating his left index finger and severely lacerating his left thumb. He was transported to a local medical center where he received surgical treatment and care, and then released 6 hours later.
