Employee Amputates Thumb While Operating Table Saw

At approximately 12:45 p.m. on June 15, 2006, Employee #1 was cutting stair rail molding on a table saw, a 10 in. Delta Unisaw. He was ripping a 6-ft to 8-ft long section of the approximately 3 in. wide molding into two pieces along the length. He was using the rip fence and a push block to guide the work into the blade. As the employee was pushing the stock through the blade and it neared the final 3 to 4 inches of length, the wood stalled during the cut, perhaps due to a knot of wood. At that point his right hand came off of the push block and went forward into the turning blade area, severing most of his thumb. He attempted to pull his hand back toward him, and the still-turning blade again came into contact with the adjacent area below his thumb, creating another incision and causing more damage below the thumb. Employee #1's thumb was amputated, and he was hospitalized. There wasn't any guard or mounting equipment for a guard installed on the saw or covering the blade, nor was there any splitter or anti-kickback device installed on the equipment. The employee had never seen or used a guard, splitter or anti-kickback device for that saw, and the employer had never mentioned their use on the saw.
