Investigation Summary
On December 12, 2005, Employee #1 and five coworkers had completed framing a double wall, approximately 10 ft. high by 18 ft. long, on the floor. Employee #1 and five coworkers lifted the back wall of the double wall, braced it, and then lifted the other part of the wall, but did not brace it. Coworker #1 was located at one end of the unbraced wall, holding it, while Employee #1 walked to the other corner of the wall to nail the wall to the adjoining wall, which was being lifted by the rest of the crew. The other four coworkers lifted the adjoining wall about half way and asked for help. Employee #1 told Coworker #1 to go help the other four coworkers, which left Employee #1 holding the unbraced wall. As the coworkers continued lifting the adjoining wall, Employee #1 felt the wall he was holding start to tilt over at the opposite end. He tried to hold the wall up, but could not, so he let it go and started to run away from the falling wall. The wall hit Employee #1 in the waist area of his back, knocked him to the concrete floor, and pinned him down. The coworkers lifted the wall off of Employee #1. Employee #1 could not move. He was taken to Simi Valley Hospital, where he was examined and transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles. Employee #1 sustained a left hip fracture and left knee fracture. He was hospitalized at Good Samaritan Hospital from December 2, 2005 to December 8, 2005, with surgery to the left hip and left knee. He was also hospitalized from December 8, 2005 to December 16, 2005 for post-op rehabilitation.
