Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202462206
Event: 10/12/2005
Employee Amputates Finger While Using Bandsaw

On October 12, 2005, Employee #1 was operating an automatic bandsaw. Pipes that were 6 ft long were placed in line and the saw automatically pushes the pipe and cuts it to a length, as predetermined by the computer. The bandsaw runs automatically until the last piece is cut, and then it is placed in manual mode. The point of operation has a guard. Once the pipe is cut, the saw blade and housing raise slowly upward. The blade is exposed approximately 4 in. at the point of operation. The employee was injured, when her hand touched the rotating saw blade while she was trying to retrieve a piece of pipe that was stuck. The employer provides a metal rod to get stuck pieces of pipe out of the point of operation. Employee #1 claimed that she was trained on the hazards of the machine but was never told to use tongs or other equipment to retrieve stuck parts. She was hospitalized for amputation of her right index finger.
