Investigation Summary
On July 13, 2004, an air conditioning maintenance technician was charging an industrial and office building HVAC unit with refrigerant. He was working alone on the roof when he called into the dispatcher to say he was finishing up this particular job. This was the last job site for this technician on this day. On the morning of July 14, 2004, the Office Manager of noticed a ladder and equipment that belonged to the technician when he arrived for work. The manager was under the impression that the technician had completed his work the previous day, so he climbed the ladder to the roof to see why he was back the second day. The manager found the technician lying on his side with a red hose cupped to his mouth. The hose was connected to an R-22 refrigerant tank. Detectives who arrived on the site contacted the employer who arrived shortly thereafter. Detectives stated that the technician was a habitual drug and alcohol user. He was also on the LAPD's drug Diversion program. The PC 1000 Drug Diversion Program is a minimum of twelve (12) weeks in duration. A minimum of 30 hours of treatment will be provided in the course of the program. Participation in the Drug Diversion Program will consist of individual and group counseling sessions. In addition, program services will also include, but not limited to educational sessions concerning drug abuse, HIV infection and AIDS and tuberculosis as related to substance abuse. According to police, victim also had marital and financial problems as well. The detectives deduced that victim had committed suicide by inhalation of R-22 refrigerant. No citation were issued.
