Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201104510
Event: 02/05/2004
Employee injured when struck by cow

On February 5, 2004, Employee #1, a 57-year-old maintenance worker, was making his rounds and checking the fencing around the employer's property. The property was home for eight beef cows and seven calves. Employee #1 noticed that a newly acquired cow just calved and the calf was laying in a puddle of mud. Employee #1 removed the calf from the puddle and left the area. He later returned and saw three dogs circling the calf and mother. Employee #1 ran the dogs off, standing about 10 to 15 ft away from the calf and cow. As he turned around towards the calf and cow, the cow struck him. Employee #1 sustained a bruised pelvis and concussion. He was hospitalized.
