Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201096625
Event: 08/22/2003
Employee's finger is injured in paper cutter

On August 22, 2003, Employee #1, an inmate employee and lead clerk with the California State Department of Corrections California Men's Colony (CMC), was cutting 0.135-in.-thick cardboard with a manual paper cutter. When he was distracted by someone calling him, Employee #1 inadvertently brought the blade down onto his left thumb. He was hospitalized at the CMC hospital ward for a partial amputation. A witness indicated he observed Employee #1 unintentionally place his thumb over the guard and in the path of the blade. During a post-incident investigation, the paper cutter had the manufacturer's guard in place, it was secured to the table, and its blade stayed in the upright position when lifted.
