Investigation Summary
On January 22, 2003, Employee #1 was injured while lifting and loading a bale of hay onto a vehicle for transportation. The hay bales weighed approximately 20 pounds to 30 pounds, and had the approximate dimensions of 41 in. long by 16 in. high by 22 in. deep. The hay bales were being moved to build a cement wash pit. Employee #1 lifted and loaded six bales working alone prior to the injury. Employee #1 was not using proper lifting techniques, namely he bent at the waist to pick up the hay bales and arched his back when throwing the bales away from his body. Employee #1 loaded the hay bail onto his legs and then did a bench-press-like movement of the bale onto the car. When Employee #1 loaded the last hay bale onto the car he felt severe pain and was not able to move. Employee #1 suffered a pinched nerve and a small degenerated and herniated disc to his L5 disc. Employee#1 was hospitalized.
