Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 300791761
Event: 10/08/2002
Employee injured when struck by air bag suspension unit

At approximately 10:15 a.m. on October 8, 2002, Employee #1 was driving a 1999 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer, Model Number FL70, for a beverage distribution company when he realized that his left rear air suspension bag was no longer functioning. He pulled over and called his company. The company sent a mechanic with a new air bag suspension unit. The mechanic installed the unit and then started the tractor up so that the air compressor would inflate the new air ride bag. While this was going on, Employee #1 walked to the left rear side of the tractor to watch the bag inflate. The bag blew up and a part of it struck Employee #1 in the face. He suffered a fractured nose, facial lacerations, and lost five front teeth. The employee was hospitalized for 4 days with his injuries.
