Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201064177
Event: 08/08/2001
Employee pinned under debris pile beneath trommel tube

On August 8, 2001, Employee #1, a 55-year-old tractor driver for a recycling company, was removing debris from the drive wheel of a large trommel machine used for the separation of wood-based compost. Employee #1 noticed debris impeding the drive wheels of the trommel tube. With the diesel engine running, Employee #1 proceeded to wedge open the hand clutch with a piece of wood, and approach the trommel tube in order to remove the debris. The drive wheel and trommel tube started moving suddenly, and Employee #1 was drug down and pinned on the debris pile beneath the trommel tube. Employee #1 suffered seven broken ribs, a bruised lung, and a lacerated hand during the accident. Employee #1 was hospitalized for his injury.
