Investigation Summary
On July 16, 2001, Employee #1 was working for a contractor who framed new single-family residential homes. Employee #1 was on the top plate, which is about nine feet above the ground. The employee was guiding the pettybone operator to unload a bundle of trusses on the level Employee #1 was standing on. Each bundled truss is about 14 inches wide. On the day of the accident, two sets of trusses were bundled side-by-side, creating a total bundle that was approximately 28 inches wide. One side of the trusses was placed on a load-bearing wall, and the other side was placed on a non-load-bearing wall (a closet wall). Employee #1 stepped on the bundled joists to unhook the rigging from the pettybone, when the nonload bearing wall collapsed. The load of joists along with Employee #1 fell to the concrete below. The joist landed on Employee #1's left leg, causing a compound fracture to the leg. Employee #1 was hospitalized, where surgery was conducted to reconstruct his fibula and his tibia.
