Employee Is Injured When Struck by Falling Boxes

At approximately 7:45 a.m. on August 13, 2002, Employee #1, a packer, was at the Bel 505 CP-1 box maker machine in the packaging area. He was unfolding the flat card boxes so he could put them on the case erector to be filled with one-gallon containers of Citrus Force detergent. He was working alongside the case erector machine when a nearby forklift lifted a pallet of approximately nine filled boxes to take them to the wrapping station. The boxes were not secured to the pallet before the forklift operator began to move it. The pallet was approximately 3-in. off the floor when the boxes slipped off and struck Employee #1 on his left shoulder. The force of the falling boxes pushed him against the protruding metal part of the snap folder modules next to where he was working. He fell, but managed to hold onto the side of the machine to arrest his fall. Employee #1 sustained contusions to his liver, lungs, and pancreas, as well as a back sprain. He was hospitalized.
