Multiple employees injured when elevator plunges downward

Employees #1 through #13 and 11 coworkers were riding a passenger elevator from the eleventh floor to the first floor, to take their morning break. The elevator, which was originally rated for 4,500 lb, began to descend, stopped, ascended to the thirteenth floor, and then descended again, accelerating rapidly as it approached the bottom. The elevator's mechanical safeties did not engage as its speed increased, and the elevator plunged into the pit area. It landed on its last safety mechanism, the hydraulic oil buffers, which did not function properly. The workers sustained assorted injuries, including broken bones, severe sprains, and back injuries. Employees #1, #2, #4, #5, $7, #8, and #10 through #12 were hospitalized as a result of their injuries.
