Investigation Summary
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on June 24, 1998, Employee #1, age 19, reported to his first day of work at CLM Landscaping. He was instructed on the proper operation of the mowing equipment and he used a self-driven mower throughout the morning. He was observed wearing a T-shirt and baseball cap, but was not seen taking any breaks or drinks. The crew stopped for lunch at approximately 12:00 noon, when Employee #1 ate a sandwich and drank two cans of Pepsi. During the afternoon, he was working without a hat and was observed sweating, but he did not take any breaks or drinks. The temperatures were in the low to mid 90's all day and the humidity had climbed throughout the day. At approximately 4:00 p.m., Employee #1 was found lying on the ground. He was transported to the hospital, where he was found to have a core temperature of over 108 degrees F. He lived for approximately 30 hours and was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. on June 26, 1998. The medical examiner indicated that Employee #1 died as a result of heat stress, and that blood tests for alcohol and other drugs were negative. No pre-existing conditions were found during the autopsy.
