Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 300109873
Event: 08/25/1997
Employee and coworkers overcome by undetermined vapors

Employee #1 and coworkers were working in an area of the production floor when they were overcome by an unknown vapor or gas. They suffered shortness of breath and nausea, and the entire production facility was evacuated. Employee #1 and eight coworkers were sent to area hospitals. After a thorough investigation by OSHA, the local fire department, and local air quality officials, nothing was detected or observed that would have caused the health reactions reported by workers. However, the employer was sent a warning letter discussing the concerns raised during employee interviews about drains backing up in nearby mixing and packaging areas. The employer was warned to look into this and to establish an ongoing aggressive drain clearing and maintenance program.
