Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14253066
Event: 08/19/1989
EMPLOYEES INJURED WHEN ROOF TRUSSES COLLAPSE

On August 19, 1989, about 16 workers were engaged in building a roof on a shed. They had erected 39 parallel wood trusses made of 2-in. by 4-in. lumber, spaced on about 2-ft centers, on top of 18-ft-high block walls. The trusses were 7 ft high at the front of the building and sloping to 2 in. at the rear. At about 4 p.m. the trusses toppled over in a domino effect. As they rotated to the side, they flexed downward between their supported ends, broke apart, and fell to the ground. At the time of the collapse, final adjustment of truss spacing was being done, and sheets of 4-ft by 8-ft by 0.4375-in. sheathing had been placed on the top chords of the trusses being stacked and spread out. All ten employees were hospitalized.
