Event: 11/08/1985
EMPLOYEES EXPOSED TO CHLORINE GAS FROM CHEMICAL REACTION

SEVERAL EMPLOYEES WERE ADDING CHEMICALS TO A SEWER IN AN EFFORT TO ELIMINATE ODOR PROBLEMS. THE CHEMICALS, TRICHLORO-S-TRIAZINE TRIONE AND CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE, REACTED TO PRODUCE CHLORINE GAS, NITROGEN TRICHLORIDE, CARBON MONOXIDE AND POSSIBLY PHOSGENE AND OTHER CHLORINE-CONTAINING GASES. THE HEAT OF THE REACTION CAUSED AUTOIGNITION. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED AND FLOODED THE CONTAINER (A METAL 30 GALLON BARREL) WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER. A PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE AND A POLICEMAN WERE GIVEN OXYGEN AFTER INHALING SOME OF THE GASES. THEY WERE TREATED ON THE SPOT BY THE RESCUE SQUAD.
