Event: 09/30/1985
Employee killed when ejected from aerial lift

At 10:00 a.m. on September 30, 1985, Employee #1 was 21 ft above a sidewalk in an articulating boom aerial lift, removing electric wiring. The lift was set up curbside at the NW corner of Eastern Avenue and Conkling Street in the westbound lane. The elbow of the boom extended 1 ft out from the left side of the vehicle. A westbound delivery truck struck the elbow of the boom, ejecting Employee #1. He fell into the eastbound lane of Eastern Avenue and was immediately struck by an eastbound tractor trailer. Employee #1, who was not wearing a body belt and lanyard, was killed. The Baltimore City DPW (public sector) was found to be in alleged violation of 29CFR 1910.67(c)(2)(ii) and 29CFR 1910.67(c) and 67(c)(2)(v), both serious.
