EMPLOYEES STRUCK BY FLYING PIECE OF TIMBER

ON OCTOBER 4, 1985, FOUR EMPLOYEES WERE WORKING IN THE VICINITY OF THE PILE DRIVING EQUIPMENT. AT THIS TIME, THE CABLE WHICH WAS LIFTING THE PILE DRIVER HAMMER SLIPPED, AND THE HAMMER FELL APPROXIMATELY 45 FEET TO THE GROUND. WHEN THE HAMMER LANDED, IT STRUCK A LARGE PIECE OF TIMBER. THE TIMBER BROKE, AND ONE END WAS THROWN WITH CONSIDERABLE FORCE INTO EMPLOYEES #1 AND #2. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS KILLED AND EMPLOYEE #2 WAS HOSPITALIZED.
