EMPLOYEE'S FINGERS CAUGHT IN CHICKEN PROCESSING MACHINE

EMPLOYEE #1 WAS CLEANING A CHICKEN GIZZARD PROCESSING MACHINE. THE MACHINE IS FULLY AUTOMATIC AND IS EQUIPPED WITH HINGED COVERS WHICH ENCLOSE THE MOVING PARTS OF THE MACHINE. THE COVERS WERE OPEN AND THE MACHINE WAS RUNNING WHILE THE EMPLOYEE WAS CLEANING IT. HE WAS WEARING GLOVES AND USING AN ABRASIVE SCRUBBING PAD TO CLEAN THE MACHINE. HE WAS SCRUBBING A METAL BAR MOUNTED OVER TWO 2 1/2 INCH DIAMETER, 25 1/2 INCH LONG METAL ROLLERS. WHILE HE WAS WIPING THE METAL BAR HIS GLOVE CONTACTED THE ROTATING ROLLERS. HIS RIGHT HAND WAS PULLED INTO THE ROLLERS AND THE ENDS OF HIS FIRST, MIDDLE AND RING FINGERS WERE SEVERLY CRUSHED. HE WAS ABLE TO PULL HIS HAND OUT OF THE ROTATING ROLLERS THROUGH THE 1/4 INCH SPACE BETWEEN THEM. HOWEVER, THE DAMAGE TO HIS FINGERS WAS SO GREAT THAT THEY HAD TO BE AMPUTATED UP TO THE FIRST JOINT DURING SURGERY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.
