Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 824318
Event: 05/27/1987
Two employees injured in fall through roof

Employees #1 and #2 were installing a new roof on a 60 ft by 40 ft building. They were standing on a 12 ft by 6 ft 3/8 in. thick sheet of asbestos that was part of the original 40-year-old building. Their job leader suggested that they go down and get some 2 by 6 boards for walkways. As the employees turned to descend, the sheeting broke and they fell 20 ft to the ground. Both employees suffered multiple fractures that required surgery and prolonged hospitalization. Employee #1 had over 30 years of experience, while Employee #2 had been on the job for only two days. The company does not train employees, but rather hires employees with experience.
