Investigation Summary
Employee #1 was tearing down the log walls of a burned out single-story log home. The roof, roof trusses, and rafters had been removed, leaving the walls unsupported at the top. Employee #1 was using a chain saw to cut the walls into sections about 10 to 12 feet long. He cut the wall from the top to the bottom, then used wood wedges and pushed by hand from the outside to push the wall section into the building. He had cut the last section of the wall in the garage and was driving a wedge on the outside near the bottom when the wind caught the wall, causing it to fall towards him. He was caught between the falling wall and a section of roof eave that was on the ground. Employee #1 died of suffocation. No hazard survey was made before demolition and no bracing was used to prevent the wall from falling.
