Investigation Summary
At 12:00 p.m. on August 14, 2024, Employee #1, a laborer employed by ProDyn, was engaged in grass-cutting operations at Barksdale Air Force Base. Employee #1 had recently returned to work after a four-day absence due to an apparent COVID-19 illness. Throughout the shift, Employee #1 performed weed-eating tasks with coworkers in high outdoor temperatures. During a scheduled break at 2:00 p.m., Employee #1 reported feeling unwell and exhibited potential heat-related symptoms. The assistant project manager was notified, provided electrolytes and water, and transported Employee #1 to the company's laydown yard. Employee #1 declined an offer to be taken to the hospital, stating that he would drive himself to seek medical attention after clocking out. The assistant project manager left Employee #1 alone at the shop at approximately 2:30 p.m. and returned at 3:00 p.m. to find Employee #1 unresponsive with fluids coming from his mouth. Emergency responders were dispatched, and Employee #1 was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead due to a suspected heat-related illness.
