Investigation Summary
At 3:45pm on June 22, 2023, an employee that had been working as a security guard for a security service was found unresponsive. The site was a university outdoor amphitheater. A concert was being held at the site and the employer was providing the security. The employee reported to work at 7:45 a.m. and was scheduled to work from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Security has been in place all day to screen incoming vehicles, event crews and their equipment. The employee was positioned at the entrance to the mall conducting screening. He had his own water container that he filled at the employer command center. The employee was provided with a shaded canopy, chair, water and radio communication beginning at 8:00 a.m. The National Weather Service recorded a maximum temperature that day of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. At about 3:30 p.m., the employee was relieved to take his afternoon break by Coworker #1 who was just starting his work shift. Coworker #1 stated he did not notice anything unusual about the employee. At about 3:41p.m., Coworker #2, who was walking to the command center to clock in, noticed the employee sitting on a bench and said he appeared to be sleeping. When Coworker #2 approached the employee, he discovered the employee was unresponsive and called 911. A bystander provided CPR. Campus police arrived with AED assisted with the resuscitation. Emergency medical services arrived took over the resuscitation. At 4:30 p.m., EMS transported the employee to the hospital. Medical personnel at the emergency room performed aggressive resuscitation, CPR and ventilation, however, the employee died from acute cardiac arrest. The employee had underlying medical issues, including a blockage to an artery.
