STRUCK BY SAW TOOTH THROWN FROM ROTATING SAW BLADE

ON JULY 24, 1984, AT APPROXIMATELY 11:30 AM, EMPLOYEE #1, A SAW OPERATOR, WAS FEEDING BOARDS INTO THE IDACO-WEBMATIC TRUSS SAW (SN 4555). A BOARD REPORTEDLY BECAME LODGED WHILE PASSING THROUGH THE NO. 2 SAW. (THE NUMBER TWO SAW WAS A 22 INCH, CARBON TIPPED BLADE, 10 HORSEPOWER, 3450 RPM SHAFT SPEED.) THIS CAUSED THE SAW TO FLEX AND STRIKE THE CHAIN DRIVE WHICH WAS FEEDING WOOD INTO THE MACHINE. ABOUT 20 OF THE 80 CARBIDE TIPS ON THE SAW BLADE WERE SHEARED OFF. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS STRUCK IN THE ABDOMEN BY A CARBIDE TIP SHEARED FROM THE SAW BLADE. HE LATER DIED FROM INTERNAL INJURIES.
