Employee with COVID-19 infection dies

An employee was working in a correctional facility where she was exposed to inmates and coworkers who were potentially infected with COVID-19. The employee tested negative on routine COVID-19 testing on September 4, 2021, and worked the next day without incident. The employee and her husband began feeling ill on September 7, 2021, so she called in sick the next day. The employee tested positive for COVID-19, was hospitalized for treatment of a cough and shortness of breath on September 16, 2021 and died on October 17, 2021, due to bilateral pneumonia and acute respiratory failure with hypoxia.
