Investigation Summary
An employee had been working as a Court Attendant for a court facilitating the courtroom process using the Zoom application. On July 22, 2021, the employee reported feeling ill and asked to leave work around noon. On July 23, 2021, the employee called in sick. On July 26, 2021, the employee called in sick again and tested for COVID-19. On July 28, 2021, the employee reported a positive test to his employer. On July 31, 2021, the employee's former spouse notified the employer that the employee had died sometime in the past 2 days. A friend discovered the employee in his home after no calls or texts were returned. Contact tracing showed that the employee shared a cubical/common desk with a coworker who had tested positive for COVID-19. The employee used the area when transferring Zoom calls and instructing court attendees. The employee and the coworker covered each other's duties during breaks. During the week of July 12, 2021, the coworker's spouse and stepdaughter became ill with flu-like symptoms but both rapid and PCR tests were negative for COVID-19. During the week of July 19, 2021, the coworker began to feel ill with the same symptoms but disregarded the symptoms due to his family's test results. The coworker informed other coworkers of his illness but that his family had tested negative. On July 22, 2021, both the employee and coworker reported being ill, but only the left work early and did not return. The coworker tested positive for COVID-19 via a rapid test on July 26, 2021, but his PCR test came negative. The employee and coworker had worked in close prolonged proximity on July 20, 2021, and July 21, 2021. The employee reported having the same symptoms as the coworker and his family. Due to the conflicting test results, it is unclear who the employee contracted COVID-19. No causes or contributing factors could be identified leading up to the illness.
