EMPLOYEES BECAME ILL FROM UNKNOWN AIR CONTAMINANT

ON MARCH 18, 1986, THREE EMPLOYEES WHO WERE WORKING IN AN AREA ADJACENT TO A KILN ROOM BECAME ILL WITH SYMPTOMS OF HEADACHE, DIZZINESS AND NAUSEA. THE KILNS WERE BEING USED TO BAKE INDUSTRIAL CERAMICS. THE THREE EMPLOYEES WERE TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM, WHERE THEY WERE TREATED AND RELEASED. POTENTIAL CONTAMINANTS GENERATED FROM THE CERAMICS BEING HEATED IN THE ELECTRIC KILNS WERE FORMALDEHYDE AND OCROLEIN. AIR SAMPLING DID NOT INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF EITHER SUBSTANCE. NO OTHER CAUSE OF THE ILLNESSES COULD BE DETERMINED.
