Investigation Summary

An employee was working as a nurse in a skilled nursing facility but was not assigned to a COVID-19 unit. The employer conducted COVID-19 surveillance testing of all employees twice per week and residents were tested weekly. Other employees tested positive for COVID-19 and the employee may have had contact with infected coworkers between November 2020, and January 2021, but actual contact was not positively confirmed. Contact tracing indicated that the employee did not have contact with the seven coworkers or two residents who tested positive between December 23-30, 2020. No other employees tested positive for six days prior to the employee. The employee contracted COVID-19, tested positive for the infection on January 5, 2021, was hospitalized on January 23, 2021, and died on February 23, 2021. The employee had pre-existing health issues which made her more susceptible to a severe COVID-19 outcome.
