Investigation Summary
An employee had been working as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a skilled nursing facility. The facility where the employee worked is primarily engaged in providing inpatient nursing and rehabilitative services, typically for extended periods of time. The facility employs approximately 148 staff, including a permanent core staff of RNs who, along with other staff, provide direct patient care. On December 7, 2020, the employee who serves as the Director of Nursing took a COVID-19 test. On December 8, 2020, the employee received a positive result. Although the employee was asymptomatic, she quarantined in an employer provided hotel. On December 21, 2020, the employee ended her quarantine and returned to work on December 22, 2020. On January 2, 2021, the employee's spouse was working at the facility as a temporary Charge Nurse. On January 6, 2021, the coworker took a COVID-19 test and the results come back positive on January 8, 2021, at which time the coworker entered quarantine at an employer provided hotel. On January 14, 2021, the employee began to exhibit COVID-19 related symptoms, including a low-grade fever and back pain. On January 17, 2021, the employee reported to the hospital where she was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia. At 9:35 p.m. on January 19, 2021, the employee's fever increased, and she was hospitalized as a result. The employer did not have Adequate Aerosol Transmissible Diseases policies and procedures in place.
