Investigation Summary
An employee was a correctional officer guard in the dental triage area of the medical unit. His job was to ensure that prisoners arrived for their appointment on time. Sometimes he would go to their housing unit to get them and other times they would be brought to him by a CO. Inmates who came to the dental area were tested for COVID-19 with a rapid test and taken away to quarantine if positive. Once negative they could go in to see the dentist. Inmates and staff both wore surgical masks. Getting prisoners into holding cells while they awaited the results of the rapid tests would put prisoners and correctional officers within 6 feet for a short period. Otherwise, COs would be physical distance from prisoners. After becoming ill on or around December 7, 2020, the employee kept in touch with the duty sergeant and informed them on December 21, 2020, of the hospitalization that occurred that same day. The employee died at the hospital at 4:00 p.m. on January 19, 2021.
