Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 132783.015
Event: 01/24/2021
Employee with COVID-19 infection dies

An employee was working for a firm that provided electronic monitoring, alcohol testing, reentry, case management and offender-management programs and services to local governments. He was a general office supervisor of a three-person office. His office activities included interacting with citizens by appointment or walk-in to applying and maintaining court-required monitoring devices. He supervised two coworkers. The first coworker worked as an equipment application technician. The second coworker was an administrative and equipment application person. On Monday, December 28, 2020, the employee and the first coworker were at work, when a client entered their 2.4-meter by 3.0-meter (8-foot by 10-foot) space coughing and having difficulty breathing and keeping a facial covering on. Both the employee and the first coworker experienced symptoms within two days of exposure to the client. On Thursday, December 31, 2020, the first coworker called in sick to the employee with low-grade fever. The employee notified the firm's regional manager in Georgia, adding that both he and the first coworker had been fighting illness all week. The regional manager contacted the first coworker and encouraged COVID-19 testing. The first coworker stated that he did not have health insurance and was looking for free COVID-19 testing. During the days following December 31, 2020, over the weekend, the employee became ill and went to a hospital. The employee tested negative for COVID-19 at the hospital and returned home with symptoms. On Monday, January 4, 2021, the employee called in sick. On January 6, 2021, the employee returned to the hospital with breathing problems and ongoing symptoms. He tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the hospital. At 6:00 a.m. on January 24, 2021, he died. The first coworker survived the illness at home. The second coworker did not develop COVID-19.
